THIS IS NOT FOREVER
|
This is not forever. Nothing is Forever; not the duration of a moment , not three month process of making. Three hundred hours is not Forever. Eternity is not woven into four feet of beadwork, infinity is not explored in the meditations of a maker. The comingling of disparate memories and histories in an object is not all-encompassing.
Moments that build up, expand, circumnavigate, perambulate, come undone, and embed themselves in rows of threads to lay dormant or to be picked up like a virus are not representative of Forever, nor do they escape temporal limits. It may be possible through these, however, to understand the particularities and peculiarities of personal forevers, perceived forevers, promised forevers, and mistaken forevers –though these admittedly are still not really Forever. Nothing is truly forever, and true forever is really nothing. It is these felt forevers- hyperbolic, sentimental, intermixed, and exclusive- which make up our time.
Our forevers are experienced; they are atemporal, interwoven, elusive, and strange. Within this chaotic non-structure, there is creative potential. We are free to pick and choose, combine and isolate its elements to learn, understand, re-complicate, animate, and make. There are no rules; there is only material and a universe full of different forevers.
The different forevers attached to each of us, to every object, and every place, both virtual and actualized, cannot escape themselves nor be shared in their totality. They are, however, permeable and networked through small triggers and connections- a group of signifiers that cause the thought processes of two humans to walk in step with each other for a moment, an entire room and its contents enveloped in the same wash of light, two minds hazed in the same tinted fog.
Might the making and viewing of objects allow us to increase accessibility to these forevers?
Meditation, repetition, and anxiety cannot affect permutations, but they can be mobilized to create a platform for them. Meditation is deep engagement with your own forever. Repetition wears down paths through it, creating networks, connections and direct routes to specific elements which can lead to revelation, or just facilitate the encountering of these elements. Anxiety can highlight certain elements, put repetition into motion, and sustain the hardening of the refrain, the flattening of the paths, the facilitation of the permutations. These walks may be spiritual, but there will be nothing in them made holy.
When we can let others peek into our forevers and absorb bits of moments, places, objects, interactions to carry and work from, forevers become rich. Richness means more revelation, more creation, more sharing in more directions. The universe becomes a many-noded, sensitive, four-dimensional space filled with orbs of experience encased in permeable membranes passing through each other and interacting in non-linear time. There is no ultimate, no single path, no end-goal, and no ideal. There is material, there is non-structure, and there are a million ways to activate each other. This is one forever.
