An ongoing project, A Slip off the Shoulder follows my ongoing explorations of themes of function, decoration, and trendiness, but with a specific focus on clothing, the body, and gendered dynamics. These semi-wearable sculptures and illustrations are responses to different archetypal or allegorical tropes that repeat throughout diverse folkloric and literary traditions to describe or problematize recurrent behavior of women or those who are othered. Hinging on the prominent role clothing, adornment and textiles play in depictions of femininity or the exoticized other that are handed down and reproduced through myth and other modes of storytelling, this project aims to mobilize the power inscribed in making, wearing, and imagining for unpacking internalized cultural narratives.
